Hurricane names: Why is it named Hurricane Irene?

Those names have been retired, replaced by Don, Katia, Rina and Whitney. Hurricane names are retired when a storm produces a particularly large amount of death and destruction; it's a sign of respect for victims and a way to reduce confusion years

In the meantime, everyone's talking about Hurricane Irene, which leads to the inevitable sidebars about hurricane names, which are doled out in alphabetical.

A list of Atlantic hurricane names is already available for the coming years. Since 1953, the National Hurricane Center produces and pre-approves this list. Only female names were included in the list before 1979. the sets of lists
